Laura and Adrian Berg of Katy, TX have been volunteering for Houston Pets Alive! since August of 2018. They are HPA! volunteers extraordinaries, acting as lead dog fosters, hosting adoption events, assisting the medical team, and stepping up everywhere in between.
How did you originally hear about HPA!?
During Hurricane Harvey. We were part of the Katy search and rescue and would end many nights either with animals at Katy Mills Mall or helping to secure transport and help out with the late night issues.
Why did you initially choose to get involved with HPA! And why do you stay involved?
We have a friend who is a foster for San Antonio Pets Alive! Once we decided to foster, we remembered HPA! from Harvey. We started looking into different organizations and applied to foster with a few. We liked the initial reception that we received from HPA! and how welcoming everyone was getting started. Having an on-site medical clinic sealed the deal. We stay because the organization takes care of its foster animals and people. The organization isn’t stagnant and its always growing and changing to better meet everyone’s needs.
Elaborate on your role/what you do:
Foster dogs! We also basically try to help out however and whenever we can. Laura likes to help out with finding new fosters and dogs, as well as with medical and adoption events. Adrian never minds stepping up with the events and with dog care. We have taken in about 160 foster dogs since August of 2018.
What advice do you have for others looking to get involved?
Be committed and open. It’s not what you expect, but better. You are saving lives and you can give back to innocent lives in need. Recognize that these animals need your help. They aren’t coming to you from a loving home. They come as stray street dogs or owner surrenders to local shelters. They need some TLC and someone to do some basic work to get them adoption ready. Be adaptable and flexible to the needs of the animals.
Is there a current pet at HPA! that you’d like to give a shout out to? Why should someone adopt him/her?
Chrissy! She is a low-key cattle dog mix that deserves a forever home. She is the perfect energy level and just needs someone to give her a space to learn to love.
Anything else you’d like to say?
HPA! is an amazing organization, and we are excited to see the continued growth into the future. We hope that more people want to become a part of this amazing team of lifesavers!
